Description
The Spider is a remote controlled self-propelled mower for the maintenance of steeply sloping areas such as embankments, roadsides and hillsides; areas that are otherwise typically maintained by teams of brush-cutter operators or tractor-powered reach mowers. Although referred to as a mower, it performs more like a remote-control slasher, is a regular comment from those attending demonstrations. It capable of cutting waist-high growth, thick and wet kikuyu, weeds and small shrubs and plants. The Spider Mower cuts slopes up to 40 degrees with its 4 wheel drive lugged tyres, and up to 55 degree slopes with its optional winch system.
- Kawasaki FS 569IV Vertical crankshaft V-twin air-cooled 4 stroke 2 cylinder engine, producing 24 hp at 2300 rpm
- The engine runs on standard unleaded or premium 95 octane unleaded for maximum performance
- Alloy construction fits into the overall Spider design philosophy of light weight package for optimal power to weight ratio
- Electronic spark ignition for reliable starting and performance
- Pressurised lubrication system for long life on slope conditions
- Dual element air cleaner and dual barrel carburettor with fuel shut-off solenoid
- Rotating grass screen to assist effective engine air-cooling
- Cast iron cylinder liners
- Separate choke and throttle controls for easier starting
- Electric starter with a 12 volt on-board battery and electrical system
- 16 litre fuel tank capacity providing between 5 and 7 operating hours depending on slope and conditions
- The deck body and super structure is made from aluminium alloy to obtain minimum overall weight of 387 kg
- The vertical engine crankshaft is coupled to an electric clutch for engagement/disengagement of the belt driven cutting blades
- The clutch unit incorporates a brake device to stop blade rotation on disengagement
- Cutting is done by 4 double sided mulching blades 505mm long (20 inches)
- Overall cutting width is 1230mm (48 inches)
- The mulching blades are set well within the deck body to minimise the ejection of grass and debris during mowing. The blades are thick hard blade steel.
- Mowing deck height is electrically adjustable from 90 to 140mm
- The height setting is controlled from the operators remote control and is variable during cutting
- An optional 40 to 110mm factory-fitted version of the deck is available, but is not interchangeable with the standard 90 to 140 mm unit
- A hydrostatic Sauer Danfoss drive system provides continuously variable travel speed in two speed ranges (turtle and rabbit modes) from 0 to 8 km/h, in forward and reverse
- All 4 wheels are driven by the hydraulic motors. All speed, steering and direction controls are located on the operator's wireless remote control
- Steering is 360 degrees on all 4 wheels without lock-to-lock limits
- Tyres are lugged 16x6.5x8 tube tyres
- The Spider Mower is capable of cutting on slopes up to 40 degrees under its own wheel drive
- Beyond these angles, the optional winch system must be utilised to ensure machine stability and safety
- The normal steering mode is referred to as the "dancing" step and is the mode normally used for mowing. In this mode all 4 wheels turn at the same time
- Skid steer mode operation is used to re-orient the mower, typically for mowing along fences, walls, loading
- Other than the clearing of an Emergency-Stop and engagement of winch operation; all operator controls are performed through the wireless remote control station
- The controller comes with a belt strap and is normally strapped to the operator as two-hand operation is required
- If the controller is dropped or all hands released, the controls revert to the neutral position and the Spider mower stops driving
- Controls include: engine start, stop and rpm; E-stop, forward/reverse speed control, steering controls, deck engagement/disengagement, height control
- A roll of the key tools required to undertake the daily checks and maintenance tasks is strapped to the mower
- The winch is hydraulically powered and integrated with the drive system
- At extreme angles, the winch system provides machine stability, traction and prevents rollover
- The integrated winch control is automatically synchronised with the drive wheel control, and does not require any additional operator controls
- The winch also maintains the engine orientation to ensure engine lubrication
