Richmond Vanadium Technology (RVT) has executed a binding mine-to-battery collaboration and project development agreement with global vanadium flow battery specialist RKP Global.
The agreement establishes a framework for the companies to jointly evaluate and develop vanadium flow battery (VFB) and long-duration energy storage (LDES) opportunities across Australia, while preserving RVT’s full ownership of its flagship Richmond–Julia Creek vanadium project in Queensland.
Under the arrangement, RVT Energy (RVTe), RVT’s wholly owned energy development subsidiary, will serve as the initial Australian project development and coordination platform for agreed projects. The framework also provides flexibility for future project-specific delivery structures, financing arrangements and downstream localisation initiatives.
The partnership follows more than two years of engagement between RVT and RKP and comes as Australia ramps up investment in long-duration energy storage technologies to support the renewable energy transition and strengthen grid reliability.
“This agreement represents an important step forward in RVT’s long-term strategy to support development of an Australian vanadium battery and long duration energy storage industry,” RVT executive chair Brendon Grylls said.
“RKP is a globally recognised participant in the vanadium flow battery sector, and this collaboration provides a strong platform to evaluate future vanadium battery and downstream energy storage opportunities in Australia.”
An initial focus of the collaboration will include assessing opportunities associated with the Western Australian Government’s Kalgoorlie Vanadium Battery Energy Storage System (VBESS) Stage Two Expression of Interest process, alongside broader opportunities in Australia’s emerging energy storage market.
“Australia has strong long-term potential in vanadium resources and renewable energy deployment,” RKP director Min Tang said. “We believe this collaboration provides an important platform to explore vanadium battery opportunities and future cooperation in the Australian market.”
The agreement also supports evaluation of future electrolyte localisation, downstream critical minerals processing and broader mine-to-battery initiatives, positioning RVT to participate across the value chain as demand for large-scale energy storage infrastructure continues to grow.
