Vulcan Energy powers Bolivia lithium push

Vulcan Energy Resources is bringing its cutting-edge lithium technology to Bolivia. EAU Lithium has signed an agreement with Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB) to explore industrial-scale lithium plants using Vulcan’s extraction methods.

The agreement follows successful trials on brine samples from Pastos Grandes, Empexa and Coipasa, as well as synthesised uyuni brine at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia.

“Vulcan is building our flagship Phase One Lionheart in Germany’s Upper Rhine Valley, having recently secured a comprehensive financing package to fund construction of the project which will utilise our VULSORB A-DLE technology,” Vulcan Energy Resources executive chair Francis Wein told Australian Resources & Investment.

“We are committed to the global deployment of our VULSORB A-DLE technology through trusted partners such as EAU Lithium.”

EAU Lithium, partnered with Vulcan Energy, was chosen from 34 contenders in a Public Tender Round to lead technology testing and viability modelling.

The contract was formalised in December 2024 in La Paz, attended by senior Bolivian officials, EU representatives, and ambassadors from EU member states.

The partnership enjoys strong European backing, particularly from Germany, highlighting Vulcan Energy’s licensing and engineering expertise, including geothermal energy research. Vulcan is also advancing its flagship lithium-geothermal project in Germany, recently securing major funding from European and German governments.

The agreement reinforces Vulcan Energy’s global ambitions, aiming to deploy its technology through trusted partners like EAU Lithium to accelerate sustainable lithium production and support Europe’s decarbonisation goals.
