Tacking tungsten supply crunch

Tungsten Mining is exploring ways to fast-track its Watershed project in Queensland, aiming to help address global supply challenges for this critical mineral.

With tungsten demand outpacing supply, the company’s evaluation could position Watershed as a timely source of near-term production.

Located roughly 115km northwest of Cairns, Watershed already has been granted mining leases and an approved Environmental Authority, meaning much of the regulatory groundwork is complete. The project hosts high-grade, near-surface tungsten zones, supported by previous studies under a definitive feasibility study.

Tungsten Mining plans drilling in the second quarter of 2026 to confirm these zones, while engineering teams review infrastructure, water, power and processing flowsheet design to optimise efficiency. If the evaluation produces positive outcomes, Watershed could move into early front-end engineering design, subject to board approval.

“Tungsten prices remain at elevated levels, underscoring the importance of secure and timely supply of this critical mineral,” Tungsten Mining chair Gary Lyons said.

“While Mt Mulgine progresses through its pre-feasibility study, Watershed reflects the flexibility of our portfolio by offering a potential near-term development and revenue path, backed by existing approvals and strong technical work.”

Metallurgical testing will start in March, using historical core samples to refine processing, while approvals work continues, including Environmental Authority reinstatement and rehabilitation planning.

As global attention intensifies on critical minerals, Watershed could provide an important new supply of tungsten, highlighting how Australian projects are stepping up to meet market demand and strategic resource challenges.
