Critical minerals deal boosts Astron

Astron’s Donald project in Victoria is emerging as a major source of critical minerals for aerospace, defence, and renewable energy industries, benefiting from the recent Australia–US critical minerals pact.

The project, which includes the world’s largest zircon deposit and one of the richest heavy rare earths deposits outside China, is targeting production by late 2027.

Astron partnered with US-based Energy Fuels, who will process Astron’s concentrate at its White Mesa Mill in Utah. The joint venture includes an equity swap and offtake agreement, clearing a long-standing bottleneck in processing monazite concentrates.

“The Donald project … is one of the richest deposits of HREEs [heavy rare earth elements] in the world, which we could bring into production by the end of 2027, thereby providing much-needed US-produced heavy rare earth oxides to other US rare earth producers,” Energy Fuels chief executive officer Mark Chalmers said.

Astron chairman George Lloyd told the Australian Financial Review that full funding for the project is not yet secured but highlighted the company’s advanced progress.

“Our final investment decision is just months away and there’s no other project that is in this really advanced state that we’re in,” he said.

“We completed our definitive feasibility study for the project 2.5 years ago. The project demonstrated robust economics, well before the geopolitical situation that we’re now seeing developed a big head of steam. Everything was in place before the latest flurry.”

The Australian Government granted major project status to Astron’s Donald project in October, recognising its significance and its potential contribution for economic growth for the country.

The designation, awarded through the Major Projects Facilitation Agency (MPFA), recognises projects with an estimated investment exceeding $50 million that contribute to strategic government priorities, economic growth, industry development and regional employment.

“We are delighted the Australian Government has recognised the national significance of the Donald project through this major project status designation,” Astron managing director Tiger Brown said. “This support will streamline our engagement with federal agencies and accelerate our pathway to development.”
