Spartan Resources, which owns several gold projects in Western Australia, has appointed a highly experienced mining executive to its board.

Craig Jones, a mining engineer with more than 28 years’ experience working in WA underground hard-rock mining operations, will join the company as chief operating officer (COO).

Prior to joining Spartan, Jones was chief executive officer of Poseidon Nickel and COO for Bellevue Gold, where he played an instrumental role in establishing the restart of the historical operation, leading the feasibility study and forming part of the team that delivered financing of the project.

Spartan is developing its flagship Dalgaranga gold project, which includes a fully-developed gold mining operation (currently on care and maintenance) and extensive exploration landholding.

Spartan managing director and CEO Simon Lawson said he was very pleased to have Jones aboard as the company defines its high-grade resources and lays the foundations for a profitable long life mining operation at Dalgaranga.

“Our strategic focus on building high-grade ounces close to existing infrastructure and the exploration success we have achieved puts Spartan in an enviable position of converting that exploration success into a number of potential production scenarios,” he said.

“Craig’s proven operational track record and experience in establishing high-quality teams and delivering significant project outcomes is a perfect fit for Spartan as we begin to plan our future as a high-grade, low-cost gold mining company.”
