One of Australia’s last unexplored copper provinces

West Arunta

The West Arunta region that spans Western Australia and Northern Territory has become a busy district in recent years.

CGN Resources – an early mover in West Arunta – is now flanked by the likes of WA1 Resources, Encounter Resources and a Rio Tinto and Tali Resources joint venture, demonstrating the growing interest in the region.

Listing on the ASX in October 2023 through a $10 million IPO, CGN is developing its 948km2 Webb project in the district, with six priority targets identified across iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG), nickel and rare earths prospects.

The company said it gained valuable insights from 2023 drilling programs, with geochemical testing significantly enhancing the understanding of Webb’s geology, stratigraphy and structure.

“The presence of ultramafic sills within the Neoproterozoic Bitter Springs basin sediments highlights the diverse geological setting of the Western Arunta,” CGN said.

“Globally a number of large magmatic nickel-copper-platinum group elements deposits occur in extensional basin settings along continent margins and will be one of the mineralisation styles targeted in the coming year.”

CGN is fully funded to undertake exploration in 2024, which will consist of ground gravity and induced polarisation (IP) surveys at the Tantor, Surus, Snorky and Horton prospects, an electromagnetic (EM) survey at the Shep prospect and a mixture of reverse circulation (RC) and diamond core drilling over Webb’s six main targets.

The explorer is targeting a major discovery at West Arunta, which, given the exploration success of WA1 Resources in 2023, could well be on the cards.

“The West Arunta is the last great unexplored frontier in Australia and is ripe for discovery,” CGN managing director and chief executive officer Stan Wholley said.

“By deploying modern and disciplined exploration CGN aims to unlock the West Arunta as Australia’s next major exploration hot spot for copper, nickel and specialty metals.”
