Follow the leaders: This week’s executive appointments

Keep up with the latest executive movements across the mining sector, featuring BHP, Galan Lithium, Burley Minerals and more.  

BHP has welcomed Catherine Tanna as a non-executive director to the board, bringing her global experience in project management.

Tanna was director of the Reserve Bank of Australia from 2011 to 2021 and was also the managing director of Energy Australia from 2014 to 2021.

She has served in senior managerial positions for BG Group and Shell, and has operating experience in Australia, Africa, Asia and Europe.

BHP chair Ken MacKenzie spoke highly of Tanna’s credentials and her benefit to BHP.

“Catherine has considerable experience in the resources sector, and her significant expertise in safety, large-scale project management and capital discipline will be highly complementary to the skills and experiences of the board,” MacKenzie said.

Galan Lithium has appointed Graeme Fox as its new chief financial officer, bringing with him more than 25 years’ experience in the mining, contracting and transport industries.

The last 20 years has seen Fox focus his time on the resources sector which has seen him serve various roles across the value chain, including at BHP, Western Mining Corporation and Macmahon.

Galan managing director Juan Pablo Vargas de la Vega said Fox was an important addition to the team.

“Graeme’s broad finance, analytical and mining experience will prove invaluable as we continue to develop our suite of lithium projects. He is a welcome and timely addition to the Galan team, and we look forward to the benefits he will bring the company.”

Galan is currently developing its Greenbushes South lithium project in Western Australia, spanning 43 square kilometres of tenements and located 15km to the south of the Greenbushes mine.

Andy Haslam has joined ASX-listed minerals processing company Elmore as a non-executive director.

Haslam has extensive experience as both a mining contractor and mine owner within the Australian resources industry. He has previously held roles at AWP Contractors, Mineral Resources and Thiess, and been the chief executive officer of ASX-listed companies Vital Metals and Territory Resources.

Elmore welcomes Haslam at a time when the company is transitioning from a small-scale processing contractor into a mine operator.

Burley Minerals has promoted Wayne Richards as managing director in addition to his role as chief executive officer of the company.

In the past, Richards has served as executive chairman and chief executive officer of Tawana Resources, managing director of Brockman Resources and executive project director of Strike Resources and Minprovise International.

He played a big part in elevating the Brockman’s Marillana iron ore joint venture project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, which the company shares with Mineral Resources. Marillana is still in its development phase.

Richards’ appointment as managing director enhances the technical and corporate experience of the board.
